The Federal Government has yesterday disclosed that it was not in support of school resumption on Jan 18, 2021 as stated but governors insisted. The Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu stated this yesterday during a daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19.

The Minister revealed that the Federal Government was in disagreement on the said resumption date but the governors insisted, though they would continue to monitor as the situation unveils, however, stated that they may likely review the date again.

Adamu stated that “We sat down, looked at the figures and we took the decision that schools should not open.

“Unfortunately, we have to state this because it is supposed to be a collective decision, but you must understand that the schools we’re talking about, the Federal Government has only about 100 out of thousands of schools.

He added that “The schools are under the jurisdiction of states and just as the PTF was unanimous in saying that schools should not open, states were unanimous that schools should open.

“So, we have to compromise and as PTF we shall monitor what is happening on a daily basis. There could be some review again”, Adamu said.

All schools in the country were directed to resume for second term session as against the increasing number of coronavirus infections the health agency is recording on daily basis in the country.

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has today reported that it recorded 1,617 fresh cases in the country which surpasses the record of the previous day with Lagos state taking the lead with 776 persons being the epicenter of the deadly virus.

Kaduna, Kwara states, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) recorded the highest number of the infection with 147, 131, and 102 respectively.

Nigerian as at the time of reporting this has a total of 112,004 confirmed cases of the global pandemic out of which 89,939 persons have been treated and discharged while 1,449 died of the pandemic.
