CAMA Launches Strategic Plan To Eliminate Malaria In Africa

The Corporate Alliance on Malaria in Africa (CAMA) has announced the launch of its strategic plan for 2021 and 2023 which comprises a set of blueprint for the elimination of Malaria in Africa for the next three years. The plan was unveiled during tha CAMA's 2020 Partners virtual meeting, saying the plan aims to reach at least 5 million people directly with malaria commodities and 100 million with prevention and control messages.

The malaria elimination plan will be carried out in partnership with private sector initiatives through intensified malaria control intervention in order to enhance awareness as well as improve malaria prevention activities.

Speaking on the development, Team Leader, Global Public Health & Special Projects, Chevron Corporation, and Co-Chair, CAMA, Michael Steinberg said " We benefit from healthier communities, as they’re interlinked with our business outcomes, with economies, and with improving local capacities."

"CAMA’s work also contributes to improved systems, partnerships and learnings that benefit local capacities well beyond [malaria], and really supports global health security," Steinberg added.

Omobolanle Victor-Laniyan, Head, Sustainability, Access Bank, and Co-Chair, CAMA said " There’s still so much we can do together to advance our objective as a responsible coalition and as responsible businesses in the face of global health challenges."

"I assure you of our continued commitment to foster collaborative efforts in the fight against malaria."

The plan also include improving outreach in high risk countries in a bid to rapidly reduce malaria cases and deaths through business support, engagements as well as community-based initiatives.

Also speaking, the Nigeria National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) Coordinator, Dr. Audu Bala Mohammed commended the private sector for their effort, adding that the NMEP malaria elimination project will run from 2021-2025.

"This meeting has come at the right time; the [Nigeria National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP)] is just about to launch the new strategic plan which will run from 2021-2025,"

"We have seen how the private sector has made a big difference when the COVID-19 pandemic began… We’re sure that this partnership and collaboration will go a long way for [Nigeria] to address the issue of malaria," Dr. Mohammed said.
