Over 2 Million People To Be Vaccinated Against Cholera

As part of the global effort to reduce cholera by 90% by 2030, WHO announced that more than 2 million people throughout Africa will receive the oral cholera vaccine.

According to a press release, this will be the “largest cholera vaccination drive in history,” with five major campaigns being implemented in Zambia, Uganda, Malawi, South Sudan and Nigeria.

“This is an unprecedented response to a spike in cholera outbreaks across Africa,” Seth Berkley, MD, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, said in a press release.

Ebola: Ministry To Place Airports, Land Borders Under Surveillance

The Nigeria Federal Executive Council (FEC) has instructed the Federal Ministry of Health to step up emergency surveillance activities at all land and airport borders in the country, towards keeping Nigerians safe from the latest Ebola Epidemic which is currently ravaging Democratic Republic of Congo.

Minister of Health, Isaac Adewale, while addressing newsmen on Wednesday after the FEC meeting said, the government is greatly concerned about the fresh outbreak of Ebola virus in Congo, and that over the last one month, DRC recorded 19 suspected cases of viral hemorrhagic fever out of which 16 of those cases resulted to deaths.

Lassa Fever Kills Health Worker In Ondo

One of the health workers in Ondo state have reportedly died of suspected lassa fever disease, at Kidney Care Centre, Medical Village, Ondo town, Ondo state.

The health office identified as Rasheedat Mohammed, who is a laboratory attendant was reportedly infected with the deadly disease in Port Harcourt, where she went to visit a relative, who had earlier been infected and died of the disease.

DR Congo Confirms Two Cases Of Ebola

The democratic republic of Congo has confirmed two cases of Ebola virus in the north-western town of Bikoro and at least 10 more cases are suspected, the head of the national institute for biological research, Jean Jack Muyembe, has said.

The two cases were confirmed by the laboratory of the National Institute of Biomedical Research in Equateur Province, northwestern DRC.

It is the nine-time Ebola has been recorded in the DRC, whose eastern Ebola river gave the deadly virus its name when it was discovered there in the 1970s.

Biggest Cholera Vaccine Drive In Africa Underway

The United Nations (UN) and charity alliance Gavi said, the biggest cholera vaccine drive in history gets underway in Africa, targeted at reining in a spate of outbreaks across the continent.

According to Gavi, Over two million people will receive the oral cholera vaccine as part of five major campaigns in Malawi, Nigeria, South Sudan, Uganda and Zambia, adding that the campaigns should be complete by mid-June.
