Biobelemoye Joy Josiah, the National Leader of Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, has requested that the Government broaden its fight against corruption and other related illegal practices endangering growth within the health sector.
He made the call at the opening of the 40th standard session of the tertiary health institutions' national consultative discussions in Kano while maintaining that until extreme measures are assembled against corrupt heads of tertiary health establishments, the needed answers to the persisting issue may be unachievable.
The union leader stressed that privatization is not the answer for difficulties militating against a functional health care framework. Josiah emphasized that: " We have cases where chief executive officers of tertiary health Dr and other medical centres embarked on reckless spending on frivolity and illegality". He also expressed that: " We know that our major predicament in the sector is corruption and I can bet you if corruption is removed from the health system, Nigerians would have privatisation and quality healthcare delivery."
Additionally, the Kano State Chairman, Medical and Health Workers Union, Kabiru Ado Minjibir, maintained that the congress of the union leaders in all the 56 tertiary health institution in Nigeria being held in Kano would address difficulties of unending strikes and disharmonious relationship amongst union members and hospital.
In relation to insight on the matter, the Chief Medical Director, National Orthopedic Hospital, Kano, Dr. Salihu Mohammed Nuhu, has called for dialogue between administrations in order to harmonise differences. He exposed the delay in the implementation of 2016 promotion was further ordered by the Government.
