The Ministry of Health and Sanitation of Sierra Leone has taken necessary measures of public health, formally notified the World Health Organization (WHO) of the Lassa fever outbreak in the country. The country has between October 30 and November 25, 2019 recorded 7 cases of the deadly fever and 3 deaths. Three of which were laboratory-confirmed cases, 2 suspected and 2 (deceased) probable cases.

According to outbreak news today, the first confirmed case was a male Dutch Medical doctor, who worked in Masanga hospital in Tonkolili District of the Northern Province of Sierra Leone. He later died in Rotterdam in The Netherlands. While, the second confirmed case was a female Dutch healthcare worker who worked with the Dutch doctor at same hospital. As of the writing of this report, 48 contacts have been identified and have been monitored in Denmark, Sierra Leone, The Netherlands, Uganda and the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, the health authorities alongside the United States Centre for Disease Control and WHO has activated the National rapid response team to conduct an outbreak investigation in Tonkolili and Bombali districts as well as other areas linked to the outbreak.
