Over 300,000 Persons Infected with Hepatitis B in Taraba State

Emerging report indicates that no fewer than 300,000 persons across ages in Taraba state were infected with Hepatitis B. This was made public on  Sunday 4th August, 209 during an event to mark the World Hepatitis Day in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba state.

In a remark made byDanjumaAddathe National Coordinator, Civil Society Network on Viral Hepatitis in Nigeria (CSNVHP), Taraba State had 15 per cent prevalent for Hepatitis B and 10 per cent for Hepatitis C in the whole of Nigeria.He stressed that Tarabastate ranked the highest in the country with viral Hepatitis as about 300,000 persons live with the disease.

Adda commended the State Government for being the first state in the country to initiate Hepatitis prevention and treatment programme. He urged the Government to include those with Hepatitis C, saying only patients with chronic Hepatitis B were currently covered in the initiative.

The CSNVHPcoordinator also urged Taraba state government and other states in the country to focus more attention on the prevention and treatment of Hepatitis. He described the disease as responsible for the annual death of over 1.34million people worldwide.
