According to Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, the Kano state Commander, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) the rate of illicit drug abuse and intake of intoxicants in the state has reduced from three to one per cent (3% to 1%) during the last quarter of 2018 spanning through the first quarter of 2019.

Abdul made the disclosure on Friday, 5th of April, 2019 when the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse (PACEDA) paid a courtesy visit the State and interacted with stakeholders such as Alhaji Shehi Abdullahi, the Chairman of Fagge Local Government Area(LGA) of the State.

The NDLEA Commander added that, a recent survey conducted by the Agency indicated that Lagos state has now taken over as the number one followed by Ogun state. Kano state which hitherto was topping the list has now dropped to the third position.

He reiterated that this success was recorded in the last few months when he assumed office as the new State Commander of the Agency in Kano state. Highlighting the wisdom behind this development, Abdul revealed that since he resumed office, he inaugurated a special operation team tagged ‘Operation Sharar Miyagu’ (OSM) aimed at checkmating the ugly trend of drug abuse in the State.

Adding that, this effort, unraveled that the drug peddlers are the suppliers of fake drugs, which the Agency is also doing everything humanely possible to tackle it. The Agency in the State, according to him, has arrested so many fake drug dealers in Sabon Gari area of the metropolis. All these achievements was made possible due to the unrelenting commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari(PMB) in the fight against the menace in Kano state in particular as well as other parts of the country as a whole.

In his remark, the Committee Chairman, retired Brig-Gen Buba Marwa disclosed that the fight against drug abuse is a great challenge to President Muhammadu Buhari hence, the wisdom in setting up this committee.

Marwa further stated that, the responsibilities of the advisory committee was to find the major causes of drug abuse from the grassroots and also suggest appropriate measures to nib the menace in the bud.

Marwa also expressed optimism that the President would take serious actions on the report and its recommendations. He made known that one of their terms of reference is to come up with measures to assist in drastic reduction of the drugs' supply into the country. Marwa also gave an insight that the committee would recommend serious and commensurate punishment as well as punitive measures to the drug dealers, suppliers, manufacturers/producers and consumers.

The committee had so far interfaced and sought the support of traditional, religious and community leaders as well as with more than 500 youths in the State.
