Lassa Fever On Rampage, 132 Lives Lost In The Last Three Month – Minister

The Minister for Health, Dr. Olorunnimbe Mamora has raised the alarm that the Lassa fever epidemic in the country requires urgent attention as it has claimed about 132 persons from January 2022 to date alone. The Minister revealed that in 23 states of the federation about 3,746 cases were reported with 691 confirmed. Dr. Mamora made this revelation in Abuja during the ministry’s bi-weekly COVID-19 update, saying the outbreak of Lassa fever is on the rise with a case of fatality rate of 19.1percent.


Though he noted that the COVID-19 incident was on the decline in Abuja, unlike Lagos state where the rise in the cases were been recorded. 

According to him, Kwara, Kaduna, and Rivers states recorded stability in the cases of COVID-19, while other states could not be ascertained at present. 

The Minister hinted that the Federal Government is planning to sequence the virus by the end of April 2022, explaining that the data from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency showed that 60 percent of those who took the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine returned to for the second dose. 

However, the Director-General of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, Ifedayo Adetifa, revealed that contrary to media speculations, Nigeria is not witnessing any spike in the COVID-19 cases. 

According to him, the agency was strengthening its national laboratory network; stressing that eight States could now test about 1000 samples per week.
