United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley has accused Pakistani Government of playing 'double game' and harbouring terrorist elements despite existing pact between both countries. Her comment is coming few days after President Donald Trump accused Pakistan of lying to the US and offering very little assistance in the hunting down of terrorist elements in neighbouring countries.
Trump also threatened to cut aid to Pakistan. Recall that Trump had tweeted on Monday that the US had foolishly paid billions of Dollars to Pakistan with nothing in return. His tweet read
"The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!"
Speaking with reporters at the UN Headquarters in New York, Haley said
"There are clear reasons for this. Pakistan has played a double game for years. They work with us at times, and they also harbour the terrorists that attack our troops in Afghanistan. That game is not acceptable to this administration."
Meanwhile, Pakistani Ambassador to the UN, Maleeha Lodhi has debunked claims by Trump and Haley stressing that her country's cooperation was not based on aid. In an email sent to Al Jazeera, Lodhi said
"We have contributed and sacrificed the most in fighting international terrorism and carried out the largest counter-terrorism operation anywhere in the world. US spokespersons should not shift the blame for their own mistakes and failures onto others."
The country's Foreign Minister, Khawaja Asif has also made the country's position known, saying she would no longer "do more." According to him "We have already told the US that we will not do more, so Trump's 'no more' does not hold any importance."
