The United States Defense Secretary, James Mattis has constituted a panel that will fashion out modalities on how President Donald Trump's new transgender military policy would be implemented. Mattis who announced the constitution of the panel on Tuesday hinted that meantime, the current policy allowing transgender individuals in the military will remain in place. He disclosed that the membership of the panel "comprises individuals from the Defense Department and the Department of Homeland Security who will provide advice and recommendations on the implementation of the President's direction".
According him, Panel members will be tasked with developing a system that "will contain the steps that will promote military readiness, lethality, and unit cohesion, with due regard for budgetary constraints and consistent with applicable law."
Recall that Trump had recently tweeted that the US military will no longer admit transgender individuals, sparking widespread outrage even among republicans. The tweet read "after consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military"
On Friday, the US President went further by advising the military to end Obama policy that allowed transgender persons to be recruited into the military.
According to CNN, President Trump also banned the military from using its resources on medical treatment regimens for individuals currently serving in the force.
Meanwhile, Mattis said he will provide advice to the President on how the policy should be implemented when the panel concludes its work.
