Nancy Pelosi, the first female speaker of the House of Representatives in the United States of America (USA) has said that she would step down as the Democrats Party’s leader in Congress. She also said she would remain in Congress but will not re-run for the position of Speaker of the House after several American news outlets forecasted that Republicans won the majority in last week’s midterm election, therefore, now making Democrats the minority in Congress.
In her address to Congress, Pelosi said, “For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic Caucus that I so deeply respect, and I’m so grateful that so many are ready and willing to shoulder this awesome responsibility.
“I have enjoyed working with three presidents achieving historic investments in clean energy with President George Bush, transformative health care reform with President Barack Obama, and forging the future from infrastructure to health care to climate action with President Joe Biden.”
She did not mention her role in President Donald Trump’s COVID-19 Rescue Programs but she spoke about the January 6th, 2021 attack on the U.S Capitol by alleged supporters of President Trump.
Pelosi was Speaker of Congress from 2007 to 2011 and served again in 2019.
The 82-year-old was the most powerful elected and the highest-ranking woman in the history of the USA until the emergence of Kamala Harris as the country’s Vice President in January 2021.
