The United States has placed a ban on imports of all oil and gas products from Russia, President Joe Biden announced. In a statement on Tuesday, Biden said the ban was aimed at pressuring Russia to end the war in Ukraine, adding that “the main artery of Russia’s economy” and aims to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine. “We’re banning all imports of Russian oil and gas and energy. That means Russian oil will no longer be acceptable at U.S. ports and the American people will deal another powerful blow to Putin’s war machine,” he said.

“We made this decision in close consultation with our Allies and our partners around the world, particularly in Europe, because a united response to Putin’s aggression has been my overriding focus, to keep all NATO and all of the EU and our allies totally united,” Biden added.

President Biden noted that the sanctions on Russia will also affect America, saying “When I first spoke to this, I said defending freedom is going to cost — it’s going to cost us as well, in the United States.”

The American president said the U.S understands that some European allies may not be able to place similar sanctions on Russia as they depend on Russian energy, noting that the U.S produces more oil domestically than all the European countries combines and assured that efforts will be made to reduce their dependence on Russian energy.

“We can take this step when others cannot, but we’re working closely with Europe and our partners to develop a long-term strategy to reduce their dependence on Russian energy, as well,” the U.S. president said.
