The United States President, Donald Trump has disclosed that his administration will no longer allow transgender persons to serve in the US military. The President made this known on Wednesday in a series of tweets. He stated that the decision was a product of sustained consultations with serving and retired military Generals as well as experts in the security sector.
“After consultation with my Generals and military experts please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the US Military."
He added that the "United States military cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail."
The ban seeks to reverse a policy introduced by Barrack Obama in 2016. The policy allowed transgender service personnel to serve publicly in the military. Meanwhile, the LGBTQ Community has condemned the decision. They maintained that the move signals Trump's apparent reversal on his commitment to protecting their rights. Trump had assured LGBTQ during his campaign that his administration would protect their rights.
Also, Sen. John Mccain has berated the President for making such policy announcement via Twitter. He reasoned that "any American who meets current medical & readiness standards should be allowed to continue serving in the Military." Former Vice President, Joe Biden has also condemned Trump's decision. On Wednesday, he tweeted "every patriotic American who is qualified to serve in our military should be able to serve. Full stop."
