The United State Government has declared it will impose visa restriction on individuals in Nigeria responsible for undermining its Democratic process.

Ms, Morgan Ortagus, a spokesperson for the U.S secretary for state revealed this in a statement on Tuesday saying the new law is aimed at taming those with election-related violence record.

Ortagus disclosed that the yet to be identified individuals had operated with impunity at the expense of ordinary Nigerian people through various forms of human right violation and undermining of democratic principle.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 39 persons died in violence-related crimes in the last general elections in the country.

The spokesperson added, the action was in fulfillment of the United State promise to see Nigerian democracy thrive and subsequently sanction those forces that are against it as well as organizers of the violent related offenses in the country.

She recalled that “In a Jan. 24 statement, the U.S. government said that we would consider consequences – including visa restrictions – for individuals responsible for undermining the Nigerian democratic process or for organizing election-related violence.

To actualize this promise, the U.S secretary of state has directed visa restriction on Nigerians believed to be responsible for, or complicit in undermining democracy process in Nigeria.

However, she did not mention the names of the individuals involved.
