The United States of America (U.S.A) has withdrawn from the Immediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with Russia. The Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo today made the announcement, at the State Department in Washington D.C.
The INF Treaty was signed in 1987 by President Reagan and Soviet leader Gorbachev, it prevents the U.S and Russia from possessing any land-based cruise missiles that can strike within 500to 5,500 kilometers (310 to 3,410 miles) range.
However, Russia has been accused of violating the treaty since 2014.
Pompeo said the security of the U.S is threatened as long as Russia continues to violate the treaty.
“For years, Russia has violated the terms of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty without remorse,” He said.
The withdrawal was not unexpected as President Donald Trump had months ago hinted that America was going to pull out of the agreement.
