Japan's Deputy Prime Minister, Taro Aso has apologized over recent controversial remarks about former leader of Nazi Party, Adolf Hitler. Aso who is also the country's Finance Minister made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing a group of Political trainees on the reasons why he joined politics.
He was quoted as saying "I won't ask you about the motive (of becoming a politician). What's important is a result. Hitler, who killed millions of people, was no good even if his motive was right..."
The statement was reported to have sparked outrage in the country and in Germany. Consequently, the Deputy PM on Thursday acknowledged that his remarks were inappropriate and withdrew same. According to him
According to him "My intention was to point out that what matters most for politicians is to bring the best results. I mentioned Hitler as an example of bad politician ... his motives were definitely wrong as a matter of course. My quotation about Hitler was inappropriate, and I would like to take it back" he added.
CNN reports that this is not the first time Aso is making inappropriate remarks about Nazis or other political figures. He was reported to have made an uncomplimentary remarks about the way Nazi Germany revised the country's Weimar constitution in 2013 when there was a heated debate on whether to amend Japan's Pacifist constitution. Aso later apologized and withdrew the comment.
