At least two people have died and about 20 missing after a powerful mudslide carrying black water buried homes in the central city of Atami in Tokyo, Japan, following a heavy downpour on Saturday, officials of the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said. The mudslide which affected about 130 buildings came after the flood, submerging about 80 houses in the seaside city.
Shizuoka prefecture spokesman Takamichi Sugiyama said the number of missing people may grow.
Speaking, Shizuoka Governor Heita Kawakatsu said coast guards found two bodies washed up into the sea by the mudslide.
"I offer my deepest condolences to everyone who has suffered," he said.
About 700 people from the police, fire department, and Japan Self-Defense Force are assisting with the rescue mission, so far 380 people have been evacuated and 10 evacuation centres have been established in the city.
