More than 100 people have been reportedly killed and hundreds of others injured as series of explosions ripped through churches and hotels in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
At least seven bombings have been reported. Easter celebrations were halted as three churches were attacked, and five-star hotels were also hit in the attacks.
The Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe condemned the attacks saying it’s a “cowardly act” and said the government was working to “contain the situation” as he has called for an emergency security meeting.
According to the police, the blasts occurred in a coordinated manner and left about 156 people dead and wounded nearly 400 people. About 35 foreigners are among the dead.
The first blast was reported at St Anthony’s Shrine, a Catholic church in the capital Colombo.
Another deadly explosion was then confirmed at St Sebastian’s, a church in the town of Negombo, north of the capital.
Soon after, police confirmed that a third church in the town of Batticaloa had been hit, along with three high-end hotels in the capital.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
