The Federal Government (FG) has encouraged Nigerian citizens in Ukraine to remain calm amid growing fears that Russia could invade the country.

This was contained in a statement released on Sunday by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

According to the statement, the Chairman of the commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians living in Ukraine to remain calm despite rising tensions between Ukraine and Russia.

The statement also stated that Nigerian Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine is working extra hard to ensure the security and safety of all Nigerians currently present in Ukraine.

According to reports, the Nigerian Embassy in Kyiv has provided further information and action for emergencies and concerns. Nigerians in Ukraine are also advised to visit the website of the Nigerian Embassy in Kyiv and follow the registration process.

The current crisis stems from the protracted Russian-Ukrainian war in 2014 where Russia had annexed Ukraine’s the Crimean Peninsula.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is mobilizing troops to the region in response to the build-up of Russian troops close to the Ukrainian border.

According to reports, 1,700 troops will be redeployed to Poland from the U.S. while 300 troops will be sent to Germany.
