After seven years, Sweden's top prosecutor Marianne Ny dropped an ongoing investigation into a rape case against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The Swedish Prosecution Authority made the decision known today in a statement issued by Ny. The statement, however, did not give reasons why it "has decided to discontinue the investigation."

Assange took refuge in Ecuador's embassy in London in 2012 to escape extradition to Sweden to answer questions about sex-crime allegations from two women. He remained at the Embassy since then, fearing leaving the place could lead to his arrest and possible extradition to the United States.

With the discontinuance of the investigation and criminal charges, Assange is no longer under any investigation in Sweden.

However, it is not yet uhuru for the Wikileaks founder as the U.S. may be considering its own charges. He also faces a charge in the U.K. of failing to appear before the court in 2012. British police insisted prior to the Swedish authority’s announcement, that Assange was still wanted in Britain for jumping bail.
