Kim who has been the acting Presidentwas reportedly picked to replace his predecessor, Meng Hongwei’s after his resignation,at a meeting with delegates of member nations in Dubai. He will serve till 2020, completingHongwei’s four-year tenure.

According to The Guardian, US, Britain and other European Nationshad opposed Prokopchuk’s attemptsto be the next President of the International Police Body, saying his election would further Russian abuses of Interpol’s “Red Notice” system to go after political opponents.

Alexander Prokopchuk who is a General in the Russian Interior Ministry will continue in his role as Interpol Vice-President. The spokeswoman, Irina Volk said, “As before, his work will focus on strengthening the position of Interpol in the International police community and increasing the efficiency of the organization’s work.”

US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo supported Kim, saying “We encourage all nations and organizations that are part of Interpol and that respect the rule of law to choose a leader with integrity. We believe Mr. Kim will be just that.”
