Britain’s MI5 spy chief accused Russia on Monday on attempting to subvert Western democracies by sowing disinformation and spreading lies.

In the first public speech outside Britain by a serving head of MI5, Andrew Parker said Britain did not want to escalate tensions with Moscow but that a series of recent aggressive and pernicious actions directed by the Kremlin were unacceptable.

Vatican Treasurer George Pell must face trial on charges of historical sexual offences, an Australian court ruled on Tuesday, making him the most senior Catholic official to be tried on such allegations. He pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Belinda Wallington handed down her decision that Pell’s case will proceed to trial in a Melbourne court, following a month-long pre-trial hearing.

Pell did not comment when he left the court, surrounded by police and flanked by his legal team.

His name was unveiled around 11 am on Friday, April 27, by Kensington Royal Palace. Emerging reports say Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been released from detention after he was arrested on Saturday amid widespread protests against President Vladimir Putin. According to Al Jazeera, Navalny was detained in Moscow where he was attending a demonstration organised by him against the inauguration of the Russian president.

Sajid Javid has been appointed the UK's new Home Secretary following the shock resignation of Amber Rudd late on Sunday night in the wake of a growing scandal over the so-called "Windrush generation" of migrants.

Javid, who is of Pakistani decent, is the first member of an ethnic minority to hold the position. He was formerly the Communities, Local Government and Housing Secretary.

Prime Minister Theresa May announced Javid's position in a tweet Monday morning.

French President Emmanuel Macron has taken aim at several key points of Trump's agenda, during his address to Congress on Wednesday.

Speaking before US lawmakers from both the Senate and the House, Macron pressed the United States to engage more in global affairs, contrasting with the steps the Trump White House has taken toward isolationism since he came into office.
