The President of Guinea-Bissau Umaro Sissoco Embalo, was unanimously elected on Sunday as the new chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He was elected at the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government 61st Ordinary Session in Accra, Ghana, to succeed Ghana’s Nana Akufo-Addo, who held the position for almost two years. The new chairman, elected for a year, will have the mandate to restore constitutional rule in Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea, which are currently under military governments.
Akufo-Addo while announcing Embalo’s emergence said “In a unanimous election, the authority of heads of state of ECOWAS elected Umaro Moktar Sissoco Embalo, President of Guinea Bissau, as the new chairman.”
In his acceptance speech, Embalo who promised to ensure the restoration of peace and stability in the subregion said “Despite the challenges that we are faced with as a result of violent extremism and the current global crisis, I believe, the solidarity within ECOWAS will enable us to overcome these challenges.”
Similarly, the appointment of Gambia’s Omar Alieu Touray as the new President of the ECOWAS Commission was also announced.
He replaces Cote d’Ivoire’s Jean-Claude Kassi Brou.
