The governments of the United Kingdom (UK) and Nigeria have signed a new migration agreement that would increase the deportation of dangerous Nigerian criminals and illegal immigrants back to their country of origin. In a Twitter post, the UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel wrote, “Our new landmark agreement with Nigeria will increase the deportation of dangerous foreign criminals to make our streets and country safer”.
The UK Home Office-Britain’s lead department for immigration stated that the new agreement “aimed at tackling illegal migration would enable both countries to work closer together on supporting safe and legal migration and speeding up the removal of foreign criminals”.
According to BBC, the UK government chartered a flight on Thursday conveying 21 people, comprising both Nigerians and Ghanaians back to their respective countries of origin.
The UK Home Office said it was committed to ending the abuse of its asylum system and deporting those with no right to remain in the UK.
A spokesperson for the Home Office, “The UK only ever returns individuals to their country of origin when the Home Office and where applicable, the court deem it is safe to do so. All asylum and human rights claims are carefully considered in accordance with our international obligations. Each individual assessment is made against the background of relevant case law and the latest country information”.
