COP15 Conference: President Buhari Travels To Abidjan

President Muhammadu Buhari departed Abuja for Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday to attend a conference organized by the United Nations on the future of land, concerning desertification, drought, degradation, rights, restoration, and its implications on national and world economies.


The conference would be held from May 9 to 10, 2022 at the Sofitel Hotel where President Buhari would join other world leaders for the 15the session of the Conference Of the Parties (COP15) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) titled ‘Land. Life. Legacy: From Scarcity To Prosperity’.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

The statement reads in part, “To achieve the visionary objective of the land restoration and balance, COP15 will bring leaders from governments, the private sector, civil society, and other key stakeholders from around the world to drive progress in the future of sustainable management of one of the most precious assets, land.

“The convention will explore links between land and other key development issues, which will be discussed during the high-level segment, including a Heads of States Summit, high-level roundtables, and interactive dialogue sessions”.

President Buhari also doubles as the President of the Great Green Wall in Africa; a program led by the African Union to combat desertification in the Sahel region by planting a wall of trees across the entire Sahel.

The President was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; Minister of Environment, Mohammed H. Abdullahi; Minister of Agriculture, Mahmoud Mohammed; Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu; the National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj. Gen. Mohammed Monguno (Rtd); Director-General, National Intelligence Agency (NIA); Ahmed Rufai Abubakar and the Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
