Mali’s former president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who led the country from 2013 until he was ousted in a coup in 2020, died at 76 years old in the capital Bamako on Sunday.
According to his family, “President IBK died this morning at 0900 GMT in his home.”
The cause of his death was not disclosed.
Keita was two years into his second five-year term when he was forced out of office by the military in a coup led by Colonel Assimi Goita on August 18, 2020.
Due to pressure from the Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS), Keita was returned to his residence in Bamako and kept under surveillance.
The ruling junta staged another coup in May 2021.
Earlier this month, ECOWAS imposed further sanctions on Mali after the military junta announced that it would stay in power for five years before holding elections.
