At least 50 people are believed dead or missing following the capsizing of a makeshift vessel on the Congo River, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) said. Nestor Magbado, spokesman for the governor of the Northwestern province of Mongala disclosed that Fifty-one bodies have been recovered from the boat and about 70 are believed to be missing, while 39 people survived.

Magbado noted that the number of passengers on board was estimated because the boat has no manifest, adding that the boat was made with 9 different traditional wooden canoes, tied together.

He said the accident might have been caused by overcrowding and bad weather.

Magbado further said that search and rescue operations are ongoing, however, hopes of finding more survivors are low.
