The African Union (AU) has announced the suspension of Guinea, following the recent coup led by Mamady Doumbouya, ousting President Alpha Conde. This announcement was made via the official Twitter handle of the political affairs, peace and security department, AU, urging the chairperson of the union to “engage with stakeholders in the region”.
Guinea’s Suspension comes after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) suspended the country on Wednesday.
Conde has been criticized for passing a new constitution that allowed him run for a third term in 2020, sparking concerns and protest.
Doumbouya had accused Conde’s government of infringing on the rights of citizens.
“The personalisation of political life is over. We will no longer entrust politics to one man; we will entrust it to the people,” Doumbouya mentioned.
Regional and International bodies including ECOWAS and the United Nation (UN) have condemned the coup, with ECOWAS demanding the immediate release of Conde.
