Rwanda’s Genocide: Suspect Finally Arrested In France After 25 Years Of Manhunt

French police have arrested one of the key actors amongst the suspect involved in the genocide that killed over 800,000 persons in Rwanda in 1994.

 

Felicien Kabuga, the suspect, also was one of the Rwandan richest guys was fingered to be a financier of the genocide was hibernating under a false identity in a French capital suburbs said the prosecutor’s office in a joint statement with the police.

The operations carried out at the wee hours of today resulted in the arrest of Kabuga, the fugitive who was declared wanted by the authorities in the last 25 years.

About 800,000 Tutsi tribal men were massacred by Hutu rebels during the pogrom in 1994.

The statement said Kabuga, 84 years tagged “Most wanted” had been living in Asnieres-sur-seine north of Paris and had been hiding with the complicity of his children.

Kabuga is being charged with the offence of creating a notorious Interahamwe militia that carried out the massacre in the 1994 genocide.

He was also behind creating a propaganda Radio-Television station Libre des Mille Collines that incited people to carry out murder in its broadcasts.

The statement states that; “Felicien Kabuga is known to have been the financier of the Rwandan genocide,” it said, adding that he had spent time in Germany, Belgium, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Switzerland.

A top UN prosecutor welcomed the arrest, saying it showed that suspects would be brought to justice no matter how long it takes.

In his statement;

“The arrest of Felicien Kabuga today is a reminder that those responsible for genocide can be brought to account, even 26 years after their crimes,” said Serge Brammertz, chief prosecutor of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals in The Hague.
