The Nigerian Embassy in Beijing, China says the Nigerian government was set to evacuate its citizens from China.
This followed some viral videos that surface online, especially, the social media showing some Nigerian Students and some businessmen in Guangzhou being humiliated through eviction from their apartments and hotel rooms in China by the authorities.
Guangzhou is one of the major cities in China that is housing the largest African communities which is considered as African hub in the Chinese Republic where buying and selling of goods takes place most for Africans.
In the video, a victim who was identified to be Nigerian was lamenting the inhumane treatment meted on them by the Chinese authorities, who they said have neglected them to their faith with hunger and no alternative for survival since their eviction.
In his statement in the video; “We have no house, no food, no hotel,” one student from Nigeria told the BBC.
“There are up to 100 people still on the streets.
People want to go back to their countries.
I don’t know what the problem is with China.
Everywhere that Africans live they are pushing us away.”
Contain in an open letter of complaint written by the All African Association to Guangzhou, community leaders, they solicited with the authorities to end the ill-treatment and hate rate being meted on Africans in the province.
The letter indicates that; “About 10 African community leaders in Guangzhou are technically under house arrest using the term quarantine.
These actions are difficult to comprehend when you consider the fact that these are people whose official test results came back negative just one or two days ago.”
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama on Thursday tweeted that he invites the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Zhou Pingjian, to communicate the Nigerian government concern at the allegation of maltreatment of its citizens in Guangzhou.
Meanwhile, Ferdinand Nwonye, the spokesperson to the Minister disclosed that the Minister drew the attention of the Chinese Ambassador to react to the videos making round on the social Media concerning the treatment of Nigerians in Guangzhou and comment.
The Ambassador has promised to look into the matter and will get back to the Minister as soon as possible.
