According to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Executive Chairperson, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), nine Nigerians were killed in an airstrike on a migrants’ camp in Tripoli, the capital of Libya. At least 44 people were killed while as many as 130 sustained various injuries in the incident which happened on Tuesday, 2nd July 2019.
In a statement on Thursday, 4th July 2019, Dabiri-Erewa, disclosed that the Nigerians killed in the camp were due to be airlifted back to the country.
She added that it was regrettable that the migrants survived a “treacherous journey” only to be killed in someone else’s war in Libya.
More so, it is disheartening that nine Nigerians have been identified as victims in the unfortunate incident.
Nigerians, who were due to be airlifted back to Nigeria, were cut down in their prime. Dabiri-Erewa also called on Nigerians, especially the youths, to shun movement into hostile countries.
The statement strongly advised Nigerian that if they have to leave the country, they should do so legally with a legitimate mission to those countries of their choices.
She also noted that more than 13,000 migrants had been brought back to Nigeria from Libya, and expressed special appreciation to the federal government, International Organisation for Migration (IOM), National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) and other international agencies involved in the evacuation of the Nigerian migrants in the diaspora.
