Egypt’s first democratically elected President, Mohamed Morsi collapsed and died in court, after making his final statement during his trial on espionage charges. Morsi, 67, was ousted following allegations of his collaboration with foreign powers and militant movements.


"He spoke 7 minutes just before the trial session adjourned," Morsy's lawyer Abdel Moneim Abdel Maqsoud told CNN. "A minute after, we saw fuss in the court glass box, we could hear the defendants screaming, Dr. Morsi has fallen," said Abdel Maqsoud.


According to Al Ahram online, Egypts’ state-run newspaper, the former president suffered a heart attack and was pronounced dead at 4:50 pm.


Mohamed Morsi who was a senio member of the Muslim Brotherhood was voted into power in June 2012 with 51.7 percent votes, after the Arab Spring uprising that overturned Hosni Mubarak’s rule.


He alongside the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood movement was banned by the government were ousted in a 2013 coup by the military, after Morsi forced a strict conservative agenda.


Morsi was buried early hours of today, at the Muslim Brotherhood Spiritual guides in Madinat Nasr, eastern Cairo.
