Military Threatens To Take Over Power In Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s top military general on Monday called for an immediate end to purges against former liberation war fighters in President Robert Mugabe’s ruling party after Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa was removed from office.

President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan arrived for a three-day visit in Uganda on Monday, defying an international Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against him. The ICC issued arrest warrants for al-Bashir in 2009 and 2010 on charges of war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity in the Sudanese region of Darfur.

Somaliland's electoral commission has asked the government to block social media platforms from Monday next week to prevent the spread of "fake news and misinformation" during the election period.

The officials want Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp to be blocked.

A train crash in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed 33 people, UN radio station Okapi reports.

It happened in Buyofwe in the province Lualaba, in the south of the country.

The United States military says it has carried out a drone strike against the al-Shabab extremist group in Somalia, killing "several" militants.

A statement by the U.S. Africa Command says the strike was carried out Friday night in Lower Shabelle region, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of the capital, Mogadishu.
