President Muhammadu Buhari has on Tuesday been honoured with the Grand Croix Des Ordre National Du Niger, Niger Republic’s highest National award. The award was present to Buhari by President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger in Abuja. While receiving the award, President Buhari thanked Issoufou for the honour and congratulated him on the completion of his second tenure as well as winning the 2020 Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in Africa Leadership. He noted that Issoufou displayed good leadership qualities by ensuring the economy of Niger was improved and also built the relationship between the two countries.

“Nigeria-Niger relations are based on a long common border and shared cultural and historical roots. Relations between the two countries have, over the years, been very cordial. There is a spirit of good neighbourliness between us,” Buhari said.

Speaking, President Issoufou of the Niger Republic commended Nigerians for their support, describing Nigeria as a “second home”. He added that the honour awarded to Buhari was as a result of his “fraternity, vigour, patriotism and determination to move Africa forward, starting from the West Coast.”
