Joaquin Phoenix won a Golden Globe for best actor in a motion picture drama on Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif for his role as Joker in the titled Movie.

During his acceptance speech, Phoenix touchingly thanked partner Rooney Mara and apologized to Joker director Todd Phillips for being "such a pain in the ass."

Some of Phoenix's speech got bleeped due to swearing. "Contrary to popular belief I don't want to rock the boat. The boat is fucking rocked," he said.

He also referenced climate change, both thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for its meat-free meal, and telling his fellow actors, "We don't have to take private jets to Palm Springs ... I'll try to do better, and I hope you will too."

“It’s really nice that so many people have sent their well wishes to Australia but we have to do more than that,”

“Hopefully, we can be unified and actually make some changes. It’s great to vote, but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives. We don’t have to take private jets to Palm Springs for the awards.”

Russell Crowe picked up the best acting award but couldn't attend the ceremony because he's in Australia battling the bushfire devastation. Olivia Colman took best actress in a drama series for The Crown, and Laura Dern helped Marriage Story take its only win with a supporting actress award. Succession took two awards overall, as did Chernobyl and Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag. Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood won best picture (comedy/musical) and best screenplay.
