Legendary Singer, Sir Victor Uwaifo Is Dead

Legendary highlife musician, Sir Victor Efosa Uwaifo passed away on Saturday 28th August 2021 in Benin, Edo State at the age of 80.

 

The musical genius is popularly known for his hit tracks “Mammy Water” and “Joromi” was a renowned multi-instrumentalist who was proficient in playing the electric guitar, saxophone, flute, electric piano amongst other instruments. 

Sir Victor Uwaifo was born in Benin City, Edo State on 1st March 1941 and was popularly known by his stage name “Guitar Boy”. 

The legend’s demise was disclosed by a member of his family who stated he died after a brief illness. 

Sir Victor Uwaifo was a lecturer in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Benin, Benin. 

He was the first musician to be awarded the National Merit Honours of Member of the Order of Niger (MON) and he was also the first Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Tourism in Nigeria.
