Former Hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein has on Monday been found guilty by a New York Jury and convicted of first degree sexual assault and third degree rape, making the once powerful Hollywood executive face potential life in prisonment.
Weinstein, 67, who was acquitted on most charges was convicted for sexually assaulting former production assistant, Mimi Haleyi in 2006 and raping Jessica Mann, a one time aspiring actress in 2013.
Presiding Judge, Justice James Burke ordered that Weinstein be handcuffed and held in custody immediately, declining bail request by Weinstein's lawyer.
Weinstein is likely to face 25 years in jail for sexual assault and four years for third degree rape. This conviction is a win for the #MeToo movement which has inspired victims of sexual assault and misconduct to speak up.
Over 80 women including 'Sopranos' actress, Annabella Sciorra have accused the former producer of sexual misconduct which he denied saying it was consensual.
Women who accused Weinstein have celebrated the verdict, actress and political activist Ashley Judd took to twitter, saying "For the women who testified in this case, and walked through traumatic hell, you did a public service to girls and women everywhere, thank you."
Actress, film director and producer, Rosanna Arquette also said "Gratitude to the brave women who've testified and to the jury for seeing through the dirty tactics of the defense. We will change the laws in the future so that rape victims are heard and not discredited and so that it's easier for people to report their rapes."
