A Member House of Representatives, Umar Muda has today introduced a bill into the house proposing a ban on cross-dressing in Nigeria. The bill was read for the first time today at the plenary, seeking to ban cross-dressing with exemption to only those using it for entertainment on stage. The lawmakers are concerned about the decaying moral decadence that is threatening the very foundation of African and religious culture of dressing in Nigeria.

In recent times, some Nigerian youth are using cross-dressing to rise to fame in the country, especially an Instagram entertainer, Idriss Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.

The lawmakers believed that when the bill succeeds, it will stem the tide of young boys who are struggling to introduce a culture that is alien to Africa, and offenders may risk a jail term of up to six months when found guilty.

Similarly, the bill seeks to reinforce the stance of Nigerians against the same-sex marriage prohibition act of 2013 by including cross-dressing as one of the clauses in the Act.

Recall in the said Act that same-sex couples and gay persons shall face 14 years in jail if convicted by a court.

The new clause will be such that “A person engaging in cross-dressing is guilty of an offense and liable to imprisonment of 6 months or to a fine of five hundred thousand Naira.”
