The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced that the Lagos-Kano mass transit train service would resume operations from Friday, August 13, 2021. This was made known in an interview by Ismail Adebiyi, NRC northern district regional manager. The train service through the Lagos-Kano route was suspended in March 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Adebiyi said the train service would be scheduled for once a week, which would depart Lagos state on Friday evening and would arrive in Kano state on Sunday morning.
"He also disclosed that the corporation has concluded plans to resume operations from Kaduna to Kafanchan and Kaduna to Kano before the end of August.
According to Adebiyi, 100 wagons would be rehabilitated within the next two months to improve the rail sector. He revealed that 21 of the rehabilitated wagons would be used for train services in the northern region comprising Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, and Zamfara states.
Adebiyi said the Minna-Kaduna rail mass transit has been active for the past one month and operates on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays, adding that the train leaves Minna around 7 a.m. and departs Kaduna at about 2:30 p.m.
On railway vandalism, Adebiyi said NRC is collaborating with relevant security agencies and key stakeholders to effectively address the vandalism of railway equipment.
He commended the Federal Government for improving rail services nationwide and also encouraged the public to take advantage of the transport system.
