The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Abia State governor, Senator Theodore Orji, and his son Chinedu, the current speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly over alleged diversion of public funds. The ex-governor was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and taken into custody, while his son turned himself in upon learning his father’s arrest and was immediately detained.

EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren confirmed the arrest, saying “It’s true. He was picked at the Abuja airport today”.

The ex-governor alongside his two sons, Chinedu and Ogbonna have been on the commission’s radar over alleged money laundering and misappropriation of public funds.

Orji has been accused of receiving N500million monthly as a security vote for eight years as governor between 2007 and 2015.

Other allegations include the ex-governor mismanaged N2 billion Ecological Funds as well as Sure-P Funds.
