Stimulus Package: Reps Proposes Electricity Bill Waiver For 60 Days

Speaker, House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila said the House is proposing a stimulus package that will ensure that Nigerians get free electricity supply for 60 days so as to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Adding that electricity necessary commodity consumed by every household and will thus have a great impact.

Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila in a meeting between the National Assembly leadership and the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmad, the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Ben Akabueze at the National Assembly on Saturday said that the proposed Bill will help boost the economy through the informal sector as the country prepares for the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Speaker said this bill which will be the second Stimulus Bill by the Green Chamber would be considered immediately the House reconvened from its ongoing break, which was declared due to the pandemic.

The Senate President, Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan also assured that the National Assembly would perform its constitutional roles towards ensuring that Nigerians benefit from all efforts aimed at mitigating the effects of the disease.

Sen. Lawan also noted that the meeting which is the second in about 10 days, was a testimony of the commitment of both arms of government at addressing the issues holistically.

He concluded by saying Nigerians must be assisted to weather the storm of the virus, and that critical decision needed to be taken but must be legal, which makes it important that the legislature is part of the entire process.
