Sequel to the viral video in the social media, showing the pulling apart of compartments of Ajaokuta bridge, the Federal Government has on January, the 4th, 2020 revoked the contract for the reconstruction of Ajaokuta-Itobe-Okene highway in Kogi State.
The report has it that, the decision to revoke the contract was made public on Saturday, 4th January 2020 by the Federal Controller of Works in the state, Engineer Kajogbola Olatunde while speaking with newsmen shortly after an assessment of the Ajaokuta-Itobe Bridge which was alleged to have experienced structural defect.
According to Olatunde, the contract which was hitherto awarded to Scoa Motors was revoked due to underperformance.
He added that the Federal Government was dissatisfied with the slow pace of work by the contractor even after he was being adequately mobilized.
The Controller also pointed out that the contractor has shown little competence to handle such magnitude of work and that, the Federal Government in response to concerns of commuters, have no option than to rearward the contract to a more competent construction firm.
Also, the Controller debunked the alleged structural defect recorded on the Ajaokuta-Itobe Bridge, stressing that there was no any structural defects but rather, vandalism of the electrometric rubbers covering the expansion joints and that was what exposed the adjoining compartments to look like a defect.
