Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and the association in charge of livestock and perishable goods in the South-East on Saturday, August 10, resolved to ban herders whose families do not live in the region from grazing.
The two associations said the move was aimed at checkmating insecurity as well as to enable herdsmen to know themselves in the region. According to MACBAN, destroying people's farms while grazing, will strictly be frowned at.
MACBAN and the Northern Leaders, Livestock and Perishable Goods Market traders took the decision at a meeting on Saturday, August 10.
Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, the southeast chairman of MACBAN, who made this known to newsmen shortly after the meeting, said it was a move to reduce crime rates among its members. He said the decision to do so was to caution against the destruction of peoples’ farms that leave the organization with the consequence.
“You cannot just come with your cow and graze after you destroy peoples’ farms or do something wrong, you will run overnight and leave us with the problem.
“Anybody who wants to live in Enugu state or in the southeast should be here with his family so that there is no way you will run overnight and leave your family,” he said.
He added that the same thing is being done in other states in the north as a way to restrict bad elements from destroying peace.
“This is what is done in other states in the north. If you are not with your family, there is no how you can come here so that you will not come and destroy our peace and go,” he said.
