The Nigerian Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA) has said as the rainy season enters its second phase which is his peak, more states are prone to flooding including the FCT.

The warning was targeted on 15 states which include; Jigawa, Adamawa, Delta Cross Rivers, Oyo, Lagos, Niger, Abia, Imo, Bauchi, Edo and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Engr. Clement Nze, the Director-General of the Agency disclosed this during a press briefing yesterday in Abuja. He said there are high indicators that the 36 states of the Federation including the FCT are vulnerable to different forms of flooding this year.

According to him, both River, as well as coastal flooding, is expected to threaten some places as the nation approaches its peak of raining season,” he warned, that the agency had been consistently monitoring the Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) to avert the disaster experienced in the year 2012.

He said this is because flood from the upper reaches of the Niger Basin comprising Guinea, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Cot d'Ivoire, Benin, Chad, and Cameroon would be flowing into Nigeria within a month time.

The Director revealed that it has become necessary to alert people so that the damages that were recorded in the past due to flooding may not be experienced again.

He noted that just as predicted by the NIHSA, it is unfortunate that most stakeholders and relevant institution including some state government have failed to heed to the advice of flood alert in the country.

He therefore warns, states and local governments to endeavor and remove structures built within the floodplains, clear blocked drainage, culverts and other waterways,”.

The Agency called on the government at all level for the need to put more drainage systems in place, avoid building houses in areas that will block the flow of water and provision of dams to control flood to come into the country when other neighbouring country release water their dams.
