Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday, 8th May 2019 approved the sum of N970.2 million for the provision of residential accommodation and procurement of some equipment for the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). Minister of Finance, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, made the disclosure during a briefing shortly after the weekly FEC meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Ahmed informed that the said accommodation was important because the NCS, being a Para-military organization, was trying to ensure that its Personnel are kept in a well-secured barracks as being the practice in other security agencies.
She added that the NCS, in its desire to upgrade its services to the international best practice through Information and Communication Technology (ICT), also got an approval to procure modern communication gadgets.
The Minister listed some of the gadgets as HF radios, BHF radios, walkie-talkies, cable towers, and other accessories.
The Minister also disclosed that the third paper that was approved for the Ministry was an automation project that it had been working on for a very long time.
According to her, the Project tagged "Lighthouse" is an initiative of the Ministry of Finance for a data warehousing system that is integrating different tax related data for the purpose of accurate and effective revenue assessment.
Importance of this project cannot be overemphasized, as the Minister highlighted that the project would also serve in the determination of assets and income status for both corporate and individual taxpayers in Nigeria.
