Following the unabated oil theft in the Niger-Delta region, the Federal Government has said it will deploy Army, Navy and civil defence to fight against the economic saboteurs. Consequently, the FG has set up an Inter-Ministerial Committee on the recovery of all illegally refined products being produced in the creek of the Niger-Delta region. Accordingly, those who were drafted to constitute the committee include members from the Nigerian Army, Navy, Civil Defence Corps and the Federal Ministry of Defence. Representatives from the Federal Ministry of Justice were not left behind, Environment, Nigerian National petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the Department of petroleum Resources (DPR) and the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency were also co-opted into the team.

Inaugurating the team today in Abuja, the Solicitor General of the federation, Mallam Umar Etsu Mohammed revealed that the committee was a response by the federal government effort to curb the economic sabotage and for better management of resources while protecting the product from illegal vandals operating in the creek.

Highlighting to the committee members their mandate, Etsu informed them that they are being charged with detection, reporting, evacuation, assessment and also ensuring proper disposal of the product while bearing in mind the environment.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government added that the Ministry of Justice would be responsible for coordinating the process as they shall house the secretariat.
In his statement, Etsu revealed, ‘’ It is also my hope that the proceeds from this exercise will be a source of additional revenue to the country’’

‘’The content of SOP is drawn from the provision of the Asset Tracing, Recovery and Management Regulations 2019’’
