A Federal High Court in Abuja has on Tuesday convicted and sentenced former Chairman of the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee on fuel subsidy, Farouk Lawan to seven years imprisonment. The presiding judge, Justice Angela Otaluka found the former lawmaker guilty of soliciting the sum of $3 million and collecting $500,000 bribe from the Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd, Chief Femi Otedola in a bid to remove the company’s name from the list of oil companies allegedly involved in fuel subsidy fraud in 2012.

Mr. Lawan denied the accusation but the court found him guilty on all three-count charges of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), saying the court was satisfied with the evidence submitted, making a strong case against the defendant.

The judge added that the defendant failed to convince the court that his acceptance of the bribe was as evidence to the ad-hoc committee that Zenon Petroleum was attempting to bribe the committee.

Mr. Lawan’s was convicted to 7 years jail term on the first and second counts, while he was handed 5 years on the third count, however, Justice Otaluka held that the sentence would run concurrently.
