Blackout: NNPC To Set Up Gas Power Plant In Maiduguri

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), in collaboration with other companies, has concluded a plan to establish a gas power plant to address the power outage in the state capital and its environs.

The Group Managing Director (GMD) of the NNPC, Mr. Mele Kyari stated this today in Maiduguri when he paid a courtesy call to Governor Zulum of Borno state.

Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state has been in darkness following the activities of insurgents who have cut off the power supply to the state for the past two months.

The NNPC boss said, “We think it’s very possible to establish a dedicated plant in Maiduguri which will serve the current needs and potentially supply power to other neighboring cities and even countries.

Kyari explained “We are seeing a very short time frame; between three to four months, we should be able to put up a power plant that will serve Borno,”

The GMD revealed that he was optimistic the stakeholders involved, who are the gas supplier and the power distribution company would deliver with the support from the government of Borno state.

He disclosed that the administration of President Buhari has declared that it’s a period of enjoying gas through the decade, meaning in the next ten years, there is provision for sufficient gas for domestic use in Nigeria.

He ensured the Governor that with his support the infrastructure will in no time be ready for usage and its recovery in monetary cost.

In his remarks, the state Governor applauded the zeal of the GMD for his timely intervention when his people needed his services most.

He recalled that the NNPC and its subsidiaries have played a tremendous role in the lives of the Borno state people through its humanitarian interventions.

He said, “Today’s event will change the narrative in our state as power is very essential in reducing the magnitude of poverty caused by insurgency in the state,”

Governor Zulum said the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) is set with the infrastructure while assuring of his administration support for the program he tagged “Maiduguri and Environs Emergency Power Stabilisation and Improvement Project”
