Members of Aviation unions in Lagos have on Monday commenced strike, shutting down operations of Arik Air over alleged non-payment of staff salaries and other issues bothering condition of service since April. The unions comprising of the National Union of Air Transport Employees and Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria alleged that the non-payment of their salaries began following the airline's decision to place 90 percent of the staff on compulsory leave.

The unions had earlier written a letter to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige urging him to intervene on the matter before the union commenced on strike action on Monday.

The demands of the Aviation union include payment of salary arrears, signing of Conditions of Service, remittance of Pension, Tax, and statutory deductions to the appropriate authorities as well as other pending issues.

Similarly, management of Arik Air had on Sunday requested the intervention of the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika over the strike by the Aviation union saying the strike would affect proper service delivery including safety measures put in place to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
