The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has yesterday disclosed it cannot guarantee industrial harmony failure by the state governors to conclude negotiations and subsequent payment of the new national minimum wage latest 31 December, as directed by President Buhari.
The statement was released in a communiqué shortly after the meeting held by the state council Chairmen on the implementation of the national minimum wage, saying there were currently three implementation categories that all the states fall to.
The communiqué was jointly signed by, Mr Ayuba Waba, the NLC General Secretary; Emmanuel Ugboaja and Abdulrafiu Adeniji; National chairperson, Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (Trade Union Side).
The communiqué indicated that states like Kebbi, Kaduna, Lagos, and Adamawa have commenced implementation and payment of the new minimum wage to their staff, while Jigawa state has concluded negotiations but promised to implement soon.
It was also confirmed that states like Abia, Akwa Ibom, Borno, Bayelsa, Edo, Sokoto, Niger, Ondo, Katsina, and Zamfara has also inaugurated negotiating committee of team representing both the government and labour to consider the adjustment.
Meanwhile, states who are yet to make up their mind on whether to comply with the law or not by inaugurating a committee are, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, Cross Rivers, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Kwara, Imo, Osun, Oyo, Ogun, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kogi, Taraba, Delta and Yobe states.
The communiqué further revealed that Organised Labour in the states which comprise of NLC, TUC and the Joint National Public Service Negotiating council are ready to work in harmony to ensure that civil servants get to enjoy the new salary structure.
Therefore, the labour revealed that failure of these states that are yet to put a mechanism in place for the negotiation on or before the 31st December will face their wrath.
They advised those states yet to inaugurate the negotiating team to do so while there is still time, “In the event that any state fails to comply with these resolutions on or before 31st December, 2019, organised labour would not guarantee industrial harmony in such states,”.
